How To Pick A Lock Using A Credit Card

You observe it undertaken in the movies all the time. A slickprotagonist needs to explore the bad guy's abode, therefore he whips out a card, wiggles it in the crack of the door, and then walks right on in.

However, in reality, it's not a universal lock pick technique. But, learning how to pick a lock with a credit card is a pretty cool thing to know how to do, particularly if you find yourself locked out of your own home!

Select your largest, most easily elastic credit card.

Slip the card into the vertical crack between the door and the frame (exactly where the lock is). Insert the card for as long as it will go at a perpendicular angle with the door.

Tilt the card so the side that is closest to you is almost or is touching the doorknob.

Push it til you feel it slide in far more. Bend the card the reverse way, forcing the lock to go back. Immediately open the door. It's a good idea to lean against the door while doing this, which will help it to pop open.

A different method is to push the card in between the door and the frame, like mentioned above, then pull and push at the doorknob while applying pressure on the card. This will pry the lock open gradually, however takes a bit of time, and causes more damage to the card.

Certain doors require a small effort, and may be opened simply by pushing a card into the door frame at equal height as the handle.

If you are on the side of the door that the lock is not tilted towards, the best method to do this is to tilt the card downwards and come from the top. You will have to push the card almost all the way in to reach the curved side of the lock. Moreover, you need to push hard.

Many doors have a special tab that sticks together with the latch to prevent picking with a credit card. When you get this tab to drop into the hole that the rest of the latch goes into, then the door is improperly installed and this method will work.

If the door is an exterior door which has an additional deadbolt lock - deadbolts can never be picked with a credit card and call for drilling the lock, picking the lock or kicking down the door.

In case the door has trim around it which will prevent you from opening it with a card, either remove the trim or find an alternative method of opening the door.

If the credit card does not bend enough, a business card may work because it is more flexible.

There is a chance that you may destroy your credit card.

Be cautious not to let your card slide through the door jamb and get stuck on the other side. Be prepared to show proof that you have the right to open the lock, otherwise you might end up behind the sort of confined door that a credit card won't open!
