Finding Good Credit Restoration Guidelines

In some cases, bad credit is a result of irresponsible money management. But sometimes it occurs because of unexpected financial hardship. Any day you may have all of your bills current, and the next you could become disabled or lose your job. And if you get behind on your debts, it will wreak havoc on your credit score.

Credit fix companies claim that they can remove bad entries from your credit rating report. However, did you know that you can often have entries removed yourself cheaper? There are two avenues by which you may be able to get negative entries taken from your report, which may be the best method on how to improve credit score.

First, you can do a dispute with the bureaus. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires credit bureaus to investigate any item on your credit report that you dispute. If the data is found to be false, inaccurate or unverifiable, it must be corrected or taken from your report. The bureaus have thirty days from the time they receive notice of the dispute to complete their investigation.

If there is inaccurate information on your credit report, a dispute is certainly in order. Some people have had success disputing items that were in fact accurate, including judgements, collections accounts and repossessions. If the items are not verified by the creditor (or the court in the case of judgments) within the time limit for investigation, they must be taken off.

If you do dispute a legitimate entry, simply write a letter to each of the credit bureaus stating that you dispute the entry. But keep in mind that if the entry is verified, it will remain on your report. And if the company verifies the data after the 30-day time limit, the credit bureau may reinstate the entry as long as they tell you at least 5 days before doing so.

Secondly, you can negotiate with companies. Handling creditors can be intimidating, especially if you're not on good terms with them. But speaking to your creditors directly might help you get bad data removed from your credit report.

If you just have a couple of late payments, a creditor might be willing to remove the derogatory info after you've resumed a regular payment schedule. If you've experienced repossession or had a collections account, paying in full might persuade them to remove the negative entry. Requests to remove late payment data may be made after you've brought your account current. But if you're wishing for removal of a collection or repossession, it's best to negotiate a deal before you pay anything.

There is no given that disputing information on your credit report or negotiating with creditors will get bad things removed from your record. If it doesn't, the best thing you can do is attempt to build up some positive information on your report.

The first thing you want to do once trying to rebuild a good credit score is bring delinquent accounts current. Try to hash out a deal with your creditors to achieve this, or talk to a credit counseling company. However, don't miss installments on current accounts to put money toward those that are overdue. If it comes down to paying one or the other, keep the current account current.

After you've gotten all of your accounts current, put a priority on keeping them that way. Paying on time will raise your credit rating, and with the passage of time, the good entries can override the bad.
